Lecture Programme

Amongst many of the rewarding events organised by the Friends is an annual series of lectures held at the Gallery. These lectures are free to members of the Friends and are scheduled from September to June.

These illustrated talks are given by eminent art historians, artists, critics and curators on a wide variety of art-related topics, ranging from the historical and contemporary, local and global or relate directly to Gallery exhibitions and events.

Particularly enjoyable have been lectures given by practising painters, sculptors, ceramicists, embroiderers and glass designers who have shown a fascinating insight into their work and the creative processes involved.

Over the years, for special events, we have enjoyed excellent lectures from notable speakers including Andrew Graham-Dixon, Mel Gooding, Karl Jenkins, the late George Melly and Martin Kemp.

In addition to this the Friends hold joint lectures with other local groups which have a shared interest in the Arts. Namely, the Art Fund, the Royal Institution of South Wales, Swansea University History Department, The Dylan Thomas Centre and the Historical Association-Swansea Branch.

Social Events

In order to raise funds and support the Gallery, the Friends organise a wide range of social events. These can take the form of art-related visits, travelling as a group to meet with similar organisations, or viewing exhibitions and other places of interest. We have visited Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, Laskett Gardens, Monnow Valley Arts Centre and the National Botanic Garden of Wales. All were well-attended and very enjoyable.

Previous social events have included parties held at the Gallery – particularly successful ones were based on French and Venetian Mask themes. Other enjoyable events have included Summer Garden Parties, an Art Quiz held before Christmas and most recently an Art Auction.

During 2016, a special fundraising year, we held a well-attended and successful Art Auction at the Grand Theatre, Swansea which was a 'high-spot' of our year.

The Friends provide volunteers who assist the Gallery staff with mailouts, updating the archives and greeting visitors.
