Wednesday 28 April at 7pm
House, home, nest, bird, cuckoo. Belonging, not belonging. It plays out these are the recurring themes that have for a long time bound my work as both illustrator and painter. Focusing upon Home as both symbol and filter, in this talk I will explore the associated tensions, divisions and connections that run through my research and practice.
Derek Bainton is an illustrator, painter and academic of over 20 years. For him, illustration is a cultural art form that connects and communicates beyond the limits of words and he is keenly aware how visual narrative and good design have the means to convey subtle truths about our lives and society. That fiction sometimes offers more truth than fact is a testament of the times we live in.
As a location painter, he is drawn to restless urban atmospheres. Locales that have an almost unknowable feel. Places where maps run out. The banal and commonplace. A house that keeps watch, an old window that looks. Psychogeography, in a broad sense, contextualises both his research and practice.
